Fall Creek Tree Sit Underway
6/10/2009
By Rachael McDonald

Eugene-area activists have set up a tree-sit in an area of Fall Creek that could be logged under a Bureau of Land Management plan.

The Campaign called Cascadia Summer 2009, is aimed at halting logging plans under the Western Oregon Plan Revision, nicknamed WOPR. Samantha Chirillo with Eugene Rising Tide says she wants to appeal to the Obama Administration to end what she calls “business as usual” and…

Chirillo: “To attract attention. To bring about local, statewide and national awareness of what is at stake by ancient forest clear-cutting. To protect our forest, to address climate change and for food security. And the tree sit is also a great place for training and skill-building.

Chirillo says the Fall Creek area could be logged even if the WOPR is cancelled, because it’s an area that’s also designated under the Northwest Forest Plan.  The tree sit was set up June first and is planned for the duration of the summer.
