Eugene Tango Center Hosts its Final Milonga Tuesday
6/30/2009
By Jes Burns

Eugene’s Tango Center will host its final dance tonight after 6 years at its prominent downtown location.  As the Center’s founder turns his attention to other business opportunities, the region’s dancers prepare for the last big hurrah.

The venue quickly established itself as a center for the arts in the City.  At a Monday night milonga, or dance, couples slowly begin to fill the cavernous dance hall as contemporary Tango music fill the room.

The impending closure of the Tango Center will be a blow to many dancers in the city, but as Leonard Krause says:

“One thing about Tango dancers: they’re resourceful.  They will find new places to dance, whether it’s in a street corner in an alley somewhere or in a ballroom.   So there will always be Tango in Eugene.”

Krause is one of hundreds, and likely thousands, who have taken lessons over the years – people who have built a vibrant Tango community in Eugene.   Tuesday's final milonga will be an all-night affair and the last chance Eugene dancers will have to say goodbye to the Tango center.
