Lincoln County Works To Address Chronic Homelessness
9/14/2009
By Angela Kellner

An estimated 900 homeless people live in Lincoln County. Donations and volunteers are being sought for an upcoming day of service to help the homeless. Lincoln County Commissioner Bill Hall says they’ve received money to provide emergency rent assistance and buy up foreclosed homes for low-income residents.

Commissioner Bill Hall: “The sad reality is, the extra resources are not keeping pace with the extra need.”

Last winter, the County operated a homeless warming center for a one-week trial period. They’re planning to expand it this winter. Hall co-authored a ten-year housing plan aimed at ending chronic homelessness in Lincoln County. He’ll present the report at a September 16th fundraiser for Project Homeless Connect at Newport's Presbyterian Church. The commissioner says they need help with their one-day service event for the homeless.

Commissioner Bill Hall: “Somebody once called Homeless Connect the community’s living room. An opportunity to show our neighbors in need we really care about them and want to help them acquire whatever resources they need.”

Project Homeless Connect takes place October 8th at the Church of the Nazarene in Newport.
