Eugene Veterans to Tell Their Stories in DC
11/10/2009
By Rachael McDonald

A theater project that started in Eugene will be in Washington D.C. on Veterans Day. The Telling Project will share a stage with First Lady Michelle Obama.

The Telling Project is an opportunity for veterans and their family members to share their stories in their own words on stage. Their first performance was February 2008 in Eugene. Project Director Jason Alves:

Alves: “We had just about a thousand people come up that weekend. And so that was a thousand people that you got to tell your own story to. For myself that was amazing because it wasn’t just community members and other veterans. It was also my family so I was actually able to tell my own story to my family for the first time since I’d gotten out of the service.”

Telling will be performed Wednesday afternoon at George Washington University. Michelle Obama and the Vice President’s wife Jill Biden will be there. The event is to inaugurate “Mission Serve”, to promote *service in civilian and military life. Alma Powell, the wife of Colin Powell, will be presented with the first ever Award for Excellence in National Service before Telling is performed.
