Massive Landslide Blocks Rail Link Between Eugene and California
1/22/2008
By Angela Kellner

Repair crews are having difficulty reaching the massive landslide blocking rail lines in a remote area near oakridge. There is no estimate of when the Union Pacific tracks will be cleared for freight and passenger trains.

Zoe Richmond is a spokeswoman for Union Pacific.

“One mudslide ended up covering two sections of our main track. And a main track for a railroad company is a lot like a major interstate. We have about 15 trains that go through that area a day.”

The line is Union Pacific's main connection between Eugene and California. Freight traffic is being rerouted using Burlington Northern tracks through Bend.

Amtrak passengers are being offered bus service around the closure.
