Independence Day Thoughts from John Frohnmayer (Morning Edition)

Commentator John Frohnmayer says there’s more to celebrating the 4th of July than shooting off fireworks.

                                                                                 

Frohnmayer is a lawyer, author and ethicist. He was chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts during the first Bush Administration. He teaches at Oregon State University.

150 Pies for Oregon's 150th 4th (Northwest Passage)

There’s nothing more American than Apple Pie. How about a hundred and fifty of them? The Yachats Ladies Club plans to serve 150 pies at their annual social on the 4th of July to celebrate Oregon’s sesquicentennial. The event is from 11 to 3 at the Yachats Commons. KLCC’s Rachael McDonald spoke with Sandy Dunn who is president of the Ladies Club.

Final Gavels Falls on Oregon Legislature (Northwest Passage)

The final gavel has dropped. The 2009 Oregon Legislature wrapped up business at 9:45  Monday night. Lawmakers beat their self-imposed deadline to adjourn by one day. But the debate over their accomplishments is not ending. Two possible referenda on tax increases are in the works. Lawmakers plan to return to the capitol next February, perhaps to deal with the aftermath of what voters decide. Salem Correspondent Chris Lehman reports:
