The 2015 NAACP National Convention: Conversations. Moving Forward In Our Nation And Our Communities.

Recorded on: July 24th, 2015

Air Date: July  27th, 2015

Social justice activists, community leaders, educators, professionals, and students gather in Philadelphia July 11-15 for the 106th annual convention of the NAACP. At the City Club meeting on July 24, Eric Richardson (president, Eugene-Springfield NAACP) will share his experience at the convention. Members of the faith and social justice communities will join him to explore the conversations that must take place as we work together for social justice.

"Our lives, our votes, our jobs and our schools matter,” said Cornell William Brooks, NAACP President & CEO. The convention’s 2015 theme is “Pursuing Liberty in the Face of Injustice” and focuses on civic engagement, criminal justice reform, economic opportunity, voting rights, climate justice, and education.

The convention provides opportunities for future leaders. Members of the NAACP’s Youth and College division participate in workshops, luncheons, forums, and the annual national competition and award. Maya Agapito, a 2015 South Eugene High School graduate, is slated to be recognized at the convention. As the Eugene Weekly reported, “she won a gold medal in the painting category during the NAACP Eugene Springfield ACT-SO (Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics) competition.”

As is customary at City Club’s Friday Forums, after the formal presentations, members will engage in a Q&A session with the speakers.
