The gunman who shot and killed a student and wounded a teacher at Reynolds High School was identified by authorities as 15-year-old Jared Michael Padgett. He was a student at Reynolds, but no link has been established between him and the victim, 14-year-old Emilio Hoffman.
In a briefing Wednesday morning Troutdale Police Chief Scott Anderson said Padgett arrived at the school heavily armed.
Anderson: "The shooter used an AR-15 type rifle in the attack and carried, but did not use, a semiautomatic handgun. Investigators have also recovered 9 loaded magazines, with the capability of holding several hundred rounds."
Chief Anderson said the weapons were taken from Padgett's family home. They were secured, but police say Padgett was able to get them.
The investigation found that there was an exchange of gunfire between responding officers and Padgett. But an autopsy confirmed Padgett ultimately died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
