City Club of Eugene: Secretary of State Candidate Forum

Recorded on: September 23, 2016

Air Date: September 27, 2016

The two major party candidates Dennis Richardson-R, and Brad Avakian-D, plus minor party candidate Alan Zundel-Pacific Green will participate in this candidate forum.

Second in line to the Governor, the Secretary of State is the chief elections officer responsible for interpreting election laws and supervision of all elections in the state. The Secretary of State also runs the Corporation Division, which keeps registration and public records for all businesses and non-profit corporations operating in Oregon. The Secretary of State oversees all audits of state programs, agencies or departments.

Along with the Governor and State Treasurer, the Secretary of State is one of three members of the State Land Board. The State Land Board, established by the Oregon Constitution, has jurisdiction over management of public forests held in trust for the Common School Fund to benefit Oregon public K-12 schools.

The State Archives, containing all permanent records of state government are also under the jurisdiction of the Secretary of State.

As the second highest statewide executive branch official in Oregon, the Secretary of State is first in line of succession should anything happen to the Governor.

Moderator for the candidate forum will be Chris Lehman, Salem Correspondent for OPB and KLCC.

This forum will provide Lane County voters the opportunity to hear first hand from the candidates running for Secretary of State.
