City of Eugene Signs Agreement to Open First Rest Stop for Homeless Camping

Rachael McDonald

TheCity of Eugene has signed an agreement to allow overnight camping at the first rest stop for the homeless.

Community Supported Shelters is the group behind the Conestoga Huts which are being used for shelter at Opportunity Village. Now, the non-profit has signed an agreement with the City of Eugene to operate the first-ever rest stop for the homeless. Up to 15 campers can stay overnight in tents on city-owned property at Roosevelt and Garfield. Michael Wisth is with the City of Eugene.

Wisth:  "The agreement is based off of the ordinance that council amended and that will expire in March, so the providers have through March to demonstrate success with the camps and then provide people a safe place to be through the winter months."

Wisth says there will be no cost to the city. All expenses will be handled by Community Supported Shelters. They will provide portable restrooms and trash collection. The site will be open to campers in early December. Wisth says the city is looking at additional locations.
