DeFazio To Encourage Engagement In Political Process During Campaign Forums

Tiffany Eckert

Two Oregon members of a U.S. Congressional Delegation will join forces this Saturday to “engage and inform” the public in the political process. Lane Community College will host the three major events.

U.S. Representative Peter DeFazio says, since Donald Trump’s Inauguration, his office has received an unprecedented outpouring of mail, emails and phone calls.

DeFazio: “Saying what can I do, what can I do I want to be involved. I haven’t been involved before and now I’m gonna be involved. You know I’ve seen an energy that is just phenomenal and it needs to be channeled productively.”

The congressman will hold a Community Campaign Forum at 10:30 am, to provide candid suggestions of how people can get involved. DeFazio says the first goal is to take back the U.S. House of Representatives in the 2018 congressional elections.

DeFazio: “We need 24 seats. There are 23 Republicans sitting in seats that Hillary Clinton won. There are unfortunately also 12 Democrats in seats that Trump won. Plus my seat was a virtual tie, it was the closest race in America.”

Following his forum, DeFazio will join Oregon’s U.S. senator Jeff Merkley for a rally in support of the Affordable Care Act.

Lane Transit District will add Saturday bus service to LCC. Congressman DeFazio says he plans to ride one to the events.

TAG: Also included in the events at LCC-- the Oregon Legislative Ways and Means Committee will hold a roadshow on the state budget. Then, at 2:30 pm, Congressman DeFazio will hold another community campaign forum at Oregon State University in Corvallis.
