The Egan Warming Centers in Eugene Springfield were open for 5 nights over this past week of sub freezing temperatures. The shelters were not open last night, Sunday, organizers say, because volunteers were exhausted.
Paul Neville is with St. Vincent de Paul.
Neville: "This is an effort by people in faith communities, volunteers, people just giving of themselves. The victory here is that people provided the 5 nights care. The hard part is we'd like to be able next time, I think we will, with what we've experienced, to be able to go those extra nights as well."
Neville says there were about 300 people who took shelter each night at the Egan Warming Centers. The cold snap looks to be over with lows in the 30s Monday in the Eugene Springfield area.
There are two trainings coming up for Egan volunteers:
Tuesday December 1st: 3925 Hilyard from 6-8 pm
Saturday December 5th: 1166 Oak Street from 11am-1pm.
The Egan Warming Centers also needs donations of warm blankets, sleeping bags, clothing and money. Donations can be brought to any St. Vincent de Paul location. Make sure to label the donation for the Egan Warming Center.
