Eugene is reminding Uber drivers that they will be penalized if they operate in the city without certification. The city has asked the ride-sharing app to cease its services.
Uber drivers will receive notices this week that they're violating city code when they operate without a license or certification in Eugene or Springfield. Uber has refused to get taxi licenses for its drivers since it came to Eugene last summer. City spokeswoman Laura Hammond says the council is looking at its rules around public passenger vehicles.
Hammond: "We're trying to move forward through the public process that would allow our city council and the public to be involved in deciding whether we want to change our current regulations. And we've asked Uber to respect that process while it's in place. Unfortunately, they've continued to operate so we have had to issue the civil penalties."
Uber has appealed the fines issued by the city of Eugene. Meanwhile, they keep adding up by 2-thousand dollars daily. Uber has run into snags in other cities. In Portland, Uber is working with the city to find a regulatory framework for the ride-sharing app.
The City of Eugene is holding a public hearing on public passenger vehicle rules next Tuesday January 20th at 7:30 p.m. at Harris Hall.
