Field Narrowed To Three For Civic Stadium

Jes Burns

The Eugene 4J School Board has eliminated an offer of $16.56 cents for the 10 acre Civic Stadium property in South Eugene. That brings the number of proposals to three. The board hopes to have a decision by mid February.

Still in the running are The City of Eugene, the YMCA and Fred Meyer for lease or purchase of the Civic Stadium site. A review committee ranked Fred Meyer as its top choice because of the purchase offer of 5 million dollars and greater potential property tax revenue. But Mary Walston, chair of the 4J Board, says they're not basing their decision solely on that ranking.

Walston: "We're just evaluating the three remaining proposals on the merits of the proposal itself… how does it benefit the district? How does it benefit the community? Because ultimately, we want to do what's best for the district, best for kids and best for education."

Friends of Civic Stadium had offered $16.56 --the original $1 dollar of the property in 1938 adjusted for inflation. The non-profit is focused on raising $5.5 million by January 24th. The City of Eugene made its purchase offer contingent on fundraising for renovation, maintenance and operation of Civic. The City's is the only proposal that would preserve the ball park's wooden grandstands.

Friends of Civic Stadium is having a fundraiser this Saturday night at Hop Valley in Eugene.
Supporters of the YMCA offer are holding a rally the following Saturday January 18th.
