Johan Gillette was sentenced Tuesday to life in prison with no possibility of parole. Gilllette was convicted in a jury trial of aggravated murder in the deaths of his father James Gillette and Anne Dhu McLucas. A court settlement took the sentencing out of the jury's hands.
38-year old Johan Gillette was sentenced to 2 consecutive life sentences for two counts of aggravated murder. A court settlement took the death penalty off the table and limits his appeals. Several friends and family spoke at the hearing, including Anne Dhu McLucas's son Jake Shapiro, who lives in Massachusetts with his wife and kids. McLucas had been set to get on a plane to visit her son and family just a few hours after she was fatally beaten by Gillette, She died a day later. Shapiro says he's grateful for the time McLucas did get to spend with her grandkids.
Shapiro: "She would be teaching piano to them and taught them to ski and the things that were her passions, began to really instill that in our kids who really looked forward to many more years of that."
McLucas was former dean of the University of Oregon School of music. The 71-year old was described as a vital, active woman who had a huge effect on the people around her and the world. She was in a six year relationship with James Gillette, 73. His other son James told the court that Johan had suffered abuse and bullying from his father.
