Health Officials Urge Hydration During Heat Wave

hutfour4

The hot weather this week can be deadly for small children, the elderly and people with heart disease. Lane County Public Health advises community members to plan ahead to avoid heat-related illnesses.

Chief Health Officer Doctor Patrick Luedtke  says staying hydrated is very important.
“When temperatures are this high, it’s very difficult for our body’s cooling system to cool us off enough and it’s tough for us to maintain hydration." Luedtke says, "So we sweat more and more as we encounter higher temperatures and then trying to keep that tank full is difficult, especially if we’re exerting out in this heat.”
Leudtke says water is the best, but energy drinks can help too. He advises staying away from alcohol which can add to dehydration. Leudtke reminds people not to leave children or pets in cars for any length of time. Also, to limit time spent outdoors and seek air-conditioned places to cool off.
