In Just Under A Half Hour, Civic Stadium Is Gone

John Stapleton

Eugene's historic Civic Stadium burned to the ground Monday evening around 5:30 PM. Fire crews were able to extinguish most of the flames around 7:30 PM. KLCC's Tiffany Eckert arrived at the scene and found smoke billowing from the structure. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Eckert spoke with eye witness Danny Sales, who is a varsity baseball coach at nearby South Eugene High. He says he saw the flames coming from the grandstands and called 9-11.

Sales: "I called 9-11 at 5:25 PM, and talked to them for about two or three minutes and there was people within 5 minutes so they did a great job of getting over here. It spread so fast, that was the biggest surprise for me is how fast it spread. It looked like a little, harmless fire that was in the press box about 20 to 30 feet up and behind home plate, and then all of the sudden, the whole thing was on fire cause the operator was trying to tell me, 'Hey, where is the fire, how big is it, what's it doing, and I kept having to give him a different story every time that I saw progress."

Eckert: "And what time is it now?"

Sales: "It's 6:07, so in just under a half hour, it's completely gone."
