New City Ordinance Requires Uber To Obtain A Business License

City of Eugene

The ridesharing service Uber has started a petition to continue operating in Eugene. On Monday, the city passed an ordinance requiring Uber to apply for a business license.

Uber’s petition asks the city of Eugene to adopt new regulations allowing the ridesharing service to continue operating. Laura Hammond with the city’s planning and development department says the city has updated their regulations.

Hammond: “The city council approved an ordinance that would update our public passenger vehicle code. And the update allows smart phone applications to be used to charge fares and it also clarifies that application based models do still need to get a public passenger vehicle license because they are providing transportation for hire.”

Hammond says the Eugene is willing to work with Uber but the service needs to meet them halfway. The city is asking Uber drivers to undergo background checks, provide proof insurance and pass a vehicle safety inspection.
