Oak Savannah Restoration Project Planned For Corvallis

City of Corvallis

Corvallis officials want to restore oak savannah on 100 acres of land north of the city. They plan to remove invasive weeds and shrubs and cut down Douglas Fir trees this summer.

The project is on 100 acres that include parts of popular hiking spots—Chip Ross and Timberhill Natural Areas and OSU’s Charlie Meadows. City of Corvallis spokesman Patrick Rollens says the idea is to restore the place to its original ecosystem.
Rollens: “This parcel of land represents some of the less than ½ a percent of what we’d consider pre-settlement native upland prairie and oak savannah habitats that are left in the Willamette Valley. So this is a very rare and precious parcel of land.”
The project is funded in part by a grant from the Oregon Watershed Enhancement Board. The harvest of Douglas Fir is expected to generate revenue to offset the costs.
Rollens says there may be concerns from the public about plans to cut down the fir trees.

A public meeting is scheduled for Wednesday March 30th at Chintimini Senior Center in Corvallis.
