"Pretty Safe" Summer as 2018 Fire Season Begins to Wind Down

Inciweb

Earlier this week, the Oregon Department of Forestry raised the fire danger level back up to blue or “moderate” in Lane County and parts of northern Douglas County. But, overall, it’s been pretty safe in the district this season.

While cooler nights have helped, the hot and dry afternoons continue to pose a wildfire risk. David Kjosness, ODF spokesman, says the region is nowhere near the danger level it was at last month. But, he says we’re still looking at another 2 to 4 weeks before the fire season winds down. Kjosness says ODF is grateful to the public for observing the rules and just generally being aware of what’s allowed in Oregon’s forests.

Kjosness: “It’s been a pretty safe for our district – Western Lane – this year. We haven’t had a lot of fires and we really want to keep it that way. Hopefully, they’ll continue to follow that guidance and everything will be good.”

For those looking to squeeze in one more camping trip before the rainy season arrives – campfires remain prohibited throughout the county, except in ODF approved campgrounds.

Here’s the list of approved campgrounds in Western Lane:

Whittaker Creek

Archie Knowles

Clay Creek

Smith River Falls

Vincent Creek

Honeyman Park may or may not allow fires at this time, but it is up to the park itself.
