Taxes Due Monday, Actvists Protest Misuse Of Federal Spending On Friday

Desmond O'Boyle

Today (Friday), April 15th, is traditionally when taxes are due. In conjunction with tax day a coalition of activists called on Congress to re-direct tax dollars to fight climate change, fund health care and education, and create jobs. About 25 people met at the Eugene downtown Post Office and participated in a “penny poll.” Poll participants are given 10 pennies to put in jars representing a 6-category breakdown of the Federal Budget.  Activist Susan Cundiff wants to bring awareness to the Federal Discretionary Budget.

Cundiff: “That’s the part of the budget that we actually have a say in. The huge portion of the discretionary budget, more than half, goes to the Pentagon, and much of that portion is directed to weapons contracts, foreign bases.

Cundiff hope after election season, Congress will direct tax dollars toward infrastructure improvements. This year taxes are officially due Monday (April 18th) because Emancipation Day is a federal holiday in the District of Colombia.
