With Temperature Dropping, Warming Centers Opening In Eugene, Springfield and Cottage Grove

UPDATE: Saturday, Nov. 29, 2014 11:20 A.M.:

The Egan Warming Centers confirmed they are activated for tonight, Saturday. But they will NOT be open on Sunday and Monday nights because the overnight temperatures will not be cold enough.

Those needing to get to a Warming Center tonight can ride LTD for free - just tell the driver you need to get to a warming center.  St Vincent de Paul will provide shuttle service from the First Christian parking lot behind the church to other sites from about 5:30 pm- 8:30 pm.

With colder temperatures and the threat of snow in the South Willamette Valley this weekend, warming shelters for the homeless are being activated. And because of the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, volunteers are desperately needed. In Eugene and Springfield, the Egan Warming Centerswill open Saturday night.

Sites to Activate Saturday November 29th are as follows:

First Christian Church, 11th & Oak Eugene (shuttles to take guests to other sites will arrive here at around 5:30 pm and run until about 8:00 pm). Adult site - pets allowed.

St Mary's Episcopal Church 13th & Pearl - for overflow and late arrivals only - guests to check in at First Christian. Adult site - no pets allowed.

First United Methodist Church 1376 Olive Street - YOUTH SITE - open at 7pm, pets allowed. Females 21 and under, Males 18 and under only.

Resurrection Episcopal Church 3925 Hilyard Street - Adult Site, open at 7pm, no pets allowed

Adventist Church 12th & Olympic Springfield, Adult Site, open at 6:30 pm - pets are allowed

Dayspring Church at Howard & River Road, Adult Site, open at 7pm, no pets allowed

In Cottage Grove, the Beds for Freezing Nights plans to be open Saturday and Sunday from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church located at 1025 N. 19th Street in Cottage Grove at the corner of Harvey Road & North 19th. If no guests check in by 10 p.m. the shelter will close for that night.

The warming center is for adults and families.  No unaccompanied minors. They will be referred to the Looking Glass Host Home Program. No Pets - Contact Forest Valley Veterinary Clinic for assistance by calling 541-942-9132.

The BFN Coalition, an all-volunteer non-profit organization, activates a warming center for the Cottage Grove area on winter nights when overnight lows are predicted to be 29 degrees or colder. Pastor Jim Markus spoke with KLCC's Angela Kellner about their need for volunteers and donations to keep the program running successfully.
