U Of O Spotlights Innovation

University of Oregon

It's innovation week at the University of Oregon, and Friday's Innovation Summit is packed with events showcasing every department.

Scheduled to coincide with Homecoming weekend, the celebration features 90 activities from film screenings to science lab open houses. The first-ever Innovation Summit was created by students. Kate Harmon is Program Manager with the business school:

Harmon: “This event really started with an undergraduate Entrepreneurship class that I taught in the winter term. Students were compelled to come up with an idea to spur the growth of entrepreneurship on campus.”

The hope is that students, faculty, alumni and community members learn what each other are doing and facilitate connections. One wacky, only-in-Eugene competition is the Quack Track Pitch. Harmon says participants will share their business ideas while covering a lap at Hayward Field:

Harmon: “They'll be evaluated both on the idea quality as well as potentially the running time.”

Events take place all day on and off the U of O campus. As part of the Summit, the $1 billion dollar Knight Campus design is on display at the Ford Alumni Center at 2 p.m. Friday.
