Uber Suspends Operations in Eugene

Uber

Easter Sunday marked the end of Uber in Eugene, at least for now. A hearings official last week determined the ride-service company has been violating city code.  And it must pay more than 66-thousand dollars in civil penalties that have accrued since February.

City officials say Uber must apply for a license to operate legally in Eugene. Uber has been unwilling to comply. Laura Hammond is with the city. She says Uber has halted operations temporarily.

Hammond: "Similar to what's happened in Portland, that gives us an opportunity to do some research and some outreach to our community to update the regulations that could help companies like Uber come into compliance in our city and be able to operate legally."

In a statement on its blog, Uber says it has halted operations in Eugene but hopes an agreement can be reached. The city wants Uber to comply with rules around background checks, insurance and vehicle safety that regular taxi services observe.
