"Unpack The Quack" Unloads At University Of Oregon

Trucks, boxes, totes -- and sweat -- marked the “Unpack the Quack” event at the University of Oregon.  Roughly 3,000 students and their families clustered on campus today to move in.  KLCC's Brian Bull reports.

The campus is swarming with green and yellow, as 560 volunteers help families with suitcases and boxes.  Among them is U of O president Michael Shill:

“A family comes up,  they bring their car in, and it’s like a white tornado…everything’s done like 5 minutes later.  So it’s amazing,” says Shill.

Michael Griffel is the Director of Housing. He lists the top places this year’s ducks are coming from.

“The top five states are Oregon, California, Washington, Texas, and Hawaii," says Griffel. "And the top international countries would be China, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, and Australia in the UK.”

Among this year’s arrivals are Madison Giannos from California, and Haley Rathmanner from Oregon.

Reporter:  Is there one thing in particular from home you made sure to bring out with you?

Madison:  Uhm, my entire closet? (laughs)

Haley: I’ll go with that too, I dunno! (laughs)

And Krystal Johns of Los Angeles is the first of three children to study out of state.  She shares what brought her here.

Krystal: "The weather…AND the college (laughter), the psychology program is really good.  And…the football games!"  (laughter)

Reporter:  "Are you ready to be a Duck?"

Krystal:  "Yes!  Very much.”

Tow trucks and traffic cops were also busy, to alleviate some of the “Unpack the Quack” crunch around campus.

Classes start Monday.
