UO Students Protest Proposed Tuition Hikes

Jes Burns

University of Oregon students rallied Wednesday in protest of proposed tuition hikes. The rally was followed by a meeting with administration.

The U of O is proposing a 4.7 percent increase in tuition for in-state students and a nearly 4.5 percent boost for those from outside Oregon.
Helena Schlegel is president of the Associated Students of the University. She helped organize the rally in front of the UO Administration Building.
Schlegel: “We’re just trying to let the administration know that we can’t afford these kind of increases and that there’s only so much cost-cutting happening and we need to be doing more to make sure those cost-increases aren’t being put on the back of students.”
The state has reduced its financial support of higher education over the past several years. The university raised tuition last fall. The UO Board of Trustees is expected to vote on the tuition hikes next month.
