Victims Of Roseburg Shooting May Apply For Grants

UCC Strong

Within hours of the mass shooting at Umpqua Community College, a fund was created with donations to help the victims.  More than $650,000 dollars have already been distributed to those most directly harmed by what happened. Now, nearly four months after the campus tragedy, the UCC Strong Fund is broadening its scope of support.

Students, faculty, caregivers, and first responders. These are the people who may be eligible to receive grants during this long-term phase of the UCC Strong funding process. A committee will vet applications and award money to those who can prove they suffered financial losses directly related to the shooting on October 1st.

Brian Prawitz is a UCC Strong committee member. He says while some in Roseburg who are ready to move past the tragedy, others are not.

Prawitz: “What we’re trying to do in the community as a whole is remember that we still have some people that are so hurting and it’s going to be like that for a long time. So there is some sensitivity there as well that people need to be aware of. Because some people are not quite ready to move on.”

Prawitz says there is now around $700,000 in the UCC Strong Fund and donations continue to come in. He says the grant application is not open to the public.  Funding is being directed to   those who suffered financial loses—and can prove it.
