During the month of December, the Karin Clarke Gallery in downtown Eugene is showing work from local oil painter Adam Grosowsky, and some of his new smaller paintings will surprise you.

Adam says, "What I like about a lot of the smaller paintings is they are so painterly and so gestural …I just went on a roll in the last month or so of--just do not think, and just paint really hard and really fast."

I asked Adam what he meant by “not thinking” since his finished paintings are so thought provoking with their haunting portraits in deep, rich reds, blacks, yellows and whites. He says, "The best stuff is really the unconscious stuff--it’s just one of those things--you can’t consciously summon the unconscious! But for me it’s more about speed. I just concentrate on slapping and spanking the paint!"

Adam can get emotional when he thinks about all the support he has gotten for his art. "After so long in Eugene--you know it makes me start crying, I have so many awesome clients and students from twenty five years of teaching that have supported me...I have sold hundreds and hundreds of paintings... that’s meaningful to me. And you know, a huge thank you to everyone."

When you’ve been an artist in one town for so long, the past catches up with you, and in Adam’s case, in a good way.

"I think the most rewarding responses I ever get are people who have bought paintings in the past and they say, 'Adam, we have your painting in the living room, and we’ve had it for fourteen years, and every morning I walk in that room and every day there is something new and it never gets old and we love living with your painting.' ...and that’s a very gratifying thing."

A visit to the Karin Clarke Gallery through Dec. 23  in downtown Eugene is a festive addition to any holiday art outing. Viz City is co-produced by Terry Way and Sandy Brown Jensen.
