79 UO Faculty Receive Non-Renewal Notices

Jes Burns

79 non-tenured faculty members at the University of Oregon’s largest college have received the news that they’re out of a job next year. The move is part of an overall re-structuring taking place at the U of O.

Andrew Marcus is interim Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. He says the layoffs help the college address a $4 million deficit. The plan is to hire more tenure track faculty, who, he says, can grow the research profile of the University.
Marcus: “We really want to put that money into tenure track faculty who also will be in the classroom with our students.”
Those who’ve lost their jobs are in the classroom, but on a temporary basis.  Many were on one year appointments, so the news may not have been unexpected. Still, it’s difficult to let people go.
Marcus: “There’s a human cost to it that I very much acknowledge. But at the same time it’s something that I really think will help this institution grow in ways that we all aspire to.”
Marcus says there’s been a drop in enrollment at the College of Arts and Sciences, particularly in the humanities. He’s hoping to reverse that trend.
