Amazon Trail Gets A Makeover

Karen Richards

One of South Eugene’s most loved trails is closed for renovation, but it should re-open with improved footing and lighting in a couple of months.

The Amazon Trail construction is funded in part by the 2018 parks bond. Landscape Designer Rex Redmon says the park trail will be leveled and re-built from the base up, with a new shelter and mile markers that extend south to the Rexius Trail.

Redmon says the area near Amazon Creek presents challenges because, “Basically the entire side is in a wetland area. There’s some sensitive plants bordering very close to the trail, so it’s a kind of a tricky construction project, but we’ve worked really hard with permitting and natural resources staff and the engineering staff and I think we have a good solution, but it’s going to take pretty much all of the time window we have.”

Redmon says the project needs to wrap up by October. The speed limit on Amazon Parkway has been reduced, but Redmon says there won’t be any other impacts to roads or bike paths.
