Amtrak Hoping To Get Back On The Rails

As travel and work engines slowly fire up in Oregon, Amtrak engines too are hoping to get back on track.

Amtrak is limiting ticket sales between Eugene and Portland to half capacity, to allow space for physical distancing. Shelley Snow is with the Oregon Department of Transportation, which manages the Cascades route. “Amtrak is requiring masks for riders and of course employees, that’s going to be in the stations and on the trains," says Snow. "Now once you get to your seat and you’re sitting alone, you can take your mask off.”

Snow says there’s a supply of masks for those without, but it’s best to bring your own.

Amtrak Cascades has one round-trip to Portland per day, where it used to have two, and service to Vancouver B.C. now stops in Seattle. Daily buses are also reduced, from seven to three. Snow says without a doubt there will be impacts from this huge financial hit, but says she doesn’t know yet what those are.
