The man who barricaded himself in a relative’s home with a rifle and was in a lengthy standoff with police Monday has been identified.
53-year-old Scott Edward Gardner reportedly refused to leave a townhouse on the 100 block of Westbrook Way. Eugene Police, a SWAT Team, Eugene Springfield Fire Paramedics, and a Crisis Negotiation Unit were on the scene for roughly 12 hours. Negotiators tried swaying Gardner to leave the residence, incorporating drones and a phone-carrying robot in the effort.
Bullhorn negotiations and flash bang devices were heard all across the South Hills area, as were shots allegedly fired by Gardner at police.
Gardner emerged just before midnight Monday, rifle in hand. He was shot by officers, medically treated, then transported to a hospital.
The District Attorney’s office says at last check, Gardner was in medically stable condition. Lane County’s Interagency Deadly Force Investigation Team is reviewing the incident, as is standard with all officer-involved shootings.
Gardner’s motive for the standoff remains unknown. Charges are pending.
