Blood Bank Experiences Shortage During Holidays

Lane Blood Center

During the holiday season, blood banks around the county tend to have shortages. Lane Blood Center in Eugene is hoping to inspire people to donate blood with the promise of free beer.

Kristi McElhinney is with Lane Blood Center. She says with schools closed for winter break, and other changes due to the holiday season, fewer people give blood this time of year.

McElhinney" "So there's just a whole multitude of things that cause people's normal routines of, you know, scheduling their donation appointments to just fall by the wayside. So we end up with a deficit during this time of year, nearly every year."

There tends to be more need for blood during the holidays because of traffic accidents, weather and end-of-year elective surgeries.
For the third year in a row Lane Blood Center is teaming up with Hop Valley Brewing in their "Give a pint, get a pint" campaign. Blood donors get a voucher for a free pint of beer and souvenir glass through the end of January.
