City Club of Eugene: Turtle Awards and Annual Meeting

Program Date: May 21, 2021

Air Date: May 24, 2021

From The City Club of Eugene:

Every year since 1991 the City Club of Eugene has honored one or two local folks who have stuck their necks out for the good of the community, often without much public recognition. These residents receive City Club of Eugene’s Turtle Award. These are people who, in the words of the award’s criteria, foster creative problem solving in local public affairs, stimulate constructive action, forge cooperative relationships, and honor diverse perspectives. There have been 56 Turtles since 1991. New Turtles are chosen by the existing Turtles. This year’s Turtles are Betty Snowden and Mo Young.

City Club of Eugene By-laws call for an annual meeting and election of officers and board members in May. As is customary, the president-elect, former Eugene Mayor Kitty Piercy, will be installed as President. The Nominating Committee recommended election of Kaarin Knudson as the new President-Elect and incumbent Treasurer Richmond “Skip” Coburn for another term on the board. Andrew Kalloch, Juan Carlos Molleda, and Sandra Smalley were also nominated for terms as new directors.

Betty Snowden is a motivational speaker, real estate consultant, business owner, talk show host, fundraiser, and winner of the Martin Luther King and 2014 Woman Business Leader of the Year Awards. Betty worked hard to become a top-ranked real estate sales executive, appearing weekly as the host and producer of her own half-hour program focused on real estate. The successful leap to television earned her recognition in the real estate market and provided a vehicle to showcase her knowledge and expertise in the industry.

Betty’s charm and enthusiasm made her a magnet in her community. Her ability to develop a strong following can be attributed to her contagious energy and spirit on and off air. One of Betty’s admirable priorities is caring for and helping the less fortunate. Her involvement and civic-oriented passion keep her very active with many charitable organizations. Her sincere concern for those in need is reflected in the warm hospitality of her show. Rebecca Larson and Sue Pritchard will present the award.

Mo Young is the Equity and Access Coordinator for Lane County. Prior to that position, she worked as a Substance Abuse Prevention Specialist. While titles give clues to the kind of work that Mo does, her professional and personal experiences create a clearer picture. She has been a fierce and dedicated advocate for equity and justice for her entire career. She is an educator, a co-conspirator and a thought partner to manym and she has lent her helping hands to movements for social justice in Lane County for more than 20 years. Marion Malcolm and Greg Rikhoff will present the award.
