City Seeks Funding Ideas For Town Square Project

City of Eugene

The Eugene City Council is trying to find the funds to help pay for a new City Hall and Town Square at the downtown park blocks.

The full cost of the project has not yet been determined. But, the city has identified about half the funds it anticipates needing. At their Monday work session, councilors reviewed some options for how to secure full funding. Those include selling off land, urban renewal, tapping reserves, and seeking donations.

At their Monday work session, Eugene City Councilors considered potential funding sources for the town square project.

Councilor Alan Zelenka said the project is an investment in the city.

“And I think the city of Eugene is worth it and I think, thinking small about this isn’t the way the council should move. I think we should try to do what we possibly can, being fiscally prudent, but think big. Let’s make this area in here a really special place to be.”

City staff say they’ll have specific cost estimates for the City Hall, Town Square and permanent farmers market in April.
