Corvallis Tries To Rename Its Community Center, Again

For the second time this year, the city of Corvallis is seeking input on what to call its community center.

The city wants a new name for the Chintimini Senior and Community Center. Chintinimi is a Kalapuya word and local Native Americans said they weren’t comfortable with the center bearing that name. So the city is holding an online poll to let people vote on a new name.

If that sounds familiar, it’s because the city already held a poll earlier this fall. Corvallis spokesman Patrick Rollens said the results made everyone realize it was time to go back to the drawing board.

“To be honest, we got some feedback that this was not the best collection of name possibilities," said Rollens. "People were saying they weren’t really feeling inspired or energized by the names. Which is fine. So we just tried again.”

The four finalists in this round of voting are:

  • Valleyheart Community Center
  • Corvallis Community Center
  • Engage Community Center
  • Three Leaves Community Center

The word "senior" will not be a part of the new name, as the facility now serves a much broader function. Rollens said the center will bear the new name when it reopens after a major renovation project sometime next year.
