A woman who was arrested by Eugene Police earlier this month says her dog died while she was in jail. The homeless woman had left her dog in her car while riding her bike to a donut shop, according to a posting on Craig's List.
Early on the morning of October 5th, the woman was stopped by police who were seeking burglary suspects. It turned out she had outstanding warrants, which meant officers had to arrest her. Captain Sam Kamkar of Eugene police says officers tried to find the woman's car to retrieve the dog but were unable to find it.
Kamkar: "Unbeknownst to us, she ended up staying in jail for over 2 weeks which is extremely unusual in this day and age. And when she comes out of jail, we all find out the disturbing news that her dog had died."
It's unusual for people to be kept in jail that long because of overcrowding.
Kamkar says he's trying to contact the woman, who told her story on Craig's List. That post was shared on social media. Kamkar says he wants to fully investigate the incident and try to "make it right".
