A fire that sparked Friday afternoon east of Cottage Grove is 50 percent contained as of Sunday. Officials say the Dowens Fire burned over 75 acres.
Crews were able encircle the fire with a mix of bull dozer and hand lines. The Row River Trial is an additional fire line. On Sunday, the Oregon Department of Forestry said crews are in mop up. The Row River Trail is no longer closed at Dowens Rd but officials warn cyclists and hikers to stay on the trail because the fire area is hazardous. Dowens Rd is now open to the public. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. It prompted a Level 1 (Be Ready) Evacuation notice for some residents in the area on Friday.
