Eugene City Council Has Initial Discussion Of Single-Use Plastics Ban

Rachael McDonald

The Eugene City Council is considering a ban on single-use plastics. At their work session Wednesday they had an initial discussion and learned what other cities are doing.

For example, Portland recently passed an ordinance that requires restaurants and other food purveyors to only provide straws and other single-use plastics by request.
Eugene City Councilor Emily Semple wants to go further to discourage plastic waste in the community.  “Portland’s done part of it and we haven’t and we like to be forerunners.” Semple said at Wednesday’s work session. “And I think that this is a chance for us to make a statement and to make some difference.”
Councilors plan to have another work session on a possible single-use plastic ban. They also discussed having a public hearing before drafting an ordinance.
