Eugene Councilor Proposes Name Changes to Honor Community Leaders

Eugene City Councilor Greg Evans has proposed name changes for a community center and park to honor community leaders. KLCC’s Deonna Anderson reports.

Evans wants to honor UO professor Dr. Edwin L. Coleman Sr. by putting his name on what’s currently called Westmoreland community center. He’d also like to rename Royal Elizabeth Park after former city councilor Andrea Ortiz. Evans says he hopes the name changes start a trend.

“I thought it was appropriate that we would search for some facilities within the community that both reflected the commitment that both Andrea and Ed had to the community and their contributions to the community,” he says.

Evans notes that names of facilities in Eugene don’t currently reflect community contributions of women and people of color. The proposal will have to go through a rule change and hearing process in order to be approved.
