Eugene School Board Announces Top Superintendent Candidate

An education administrator with strong Oregon ties is the top choice to become Eugene's next school superintendent. The Eugene School Board Thursday named Dr. Gustavo Balderas as the person they want to lead the district after Superintendent Shelly Berman leaves at the end of the academic year.

Balderas is currently a superintendent in California. He previously worked in the Hillsboro School District in elementary and middle school administrative roles and as a high school teacher and counselor. His resume includes work around equity and cultural proficiency. Balderas has degrees from Western Oregon University, Portland State and the University of Oregon.

The Eugene School Board will be discussing the contract with Balderas over the coming days. The board expects to vote on a formal job offer at an upcoming board meeting, possibly as early as next Wednesday, March 18.
