Eugene Transitions Away From Styrofoam

Late last year, the City of Eugene passed an ordinance banning styrofoam take-out containers. It became effective December 27th. Local officials say the response has been positive, but a few businesses are still in transition.

While it may be easy at national franchises like McDonalds to  check a box and order non-styrofoam products, local companies have had to do a bit more work. Chad West is co-president of Eugene’s Westraunt Concepts. Gesturing at the takeout containers at Bill & Tim’s Barbecue, he says they’ve worked out a plan with the City:

West: “They don’t want us to throw a bunch of stuff away that we’ve already purchased, so we will burn through the inventory we have today and we’ve already, working with Sysco, selected new products to replace the three styrofoam containers.”

 

West says the styrofoam will likely be gone in a month. It’ll be replaced with heavy cardboard containers. He says their other restaurants, Dickie Jo’s and Mucho Gusto, were already in compliance.
