Monday the final closing on Civic Stadium and the surrounding property was completed. The nonprofit group Eugene Civic Alliance and more than 120 private donors, raised 4 million dollars to purchase the site from the city.
Attorney Derek Johnson is one of the alliance volunteers.
Johnson: “It’s thrilling to have that first step done and we’re going ahead right now with the plans, with the fundraising, with the project that we put our heads to at the beginning of this process.”
The project includes renovation of the 78-year old stadium and the development of a soccer field and a field house for the group Kidsports.
Johnson says the amount of money left to raise for renovation keeps changing. He says the most pressing issue right now is the dilapidated, leaking stadium roof.
