Fire Authorities Warn Public About Fireworks Safety

City of Portland

Oregon fire authorities are urging the public to observe firework safety rules this Fourth of July weekend. With large-scale gatherings and celebrations effectively cancelled, most fireworks this year will be lit off by people without specialized training.

Eugene-Springfield deputy fire marshal Merrill Harrison suggested keeping a bucket of water and a hose handy, and to never relight a dud firework. He says illegal fireworks can be highly dangerous in close quarters, behaving unpredictably and causing more damage than fun.

“We just want to emphasize those safety measures out there,” said Harrison. "Follow the four be's: be prepared, be responsible, be safe, be aware. Let’s exercise social distancing and keep everybody safe and happy.”

Fire and police departments across the state will be working together to respond to calls and emergencies this weekend. They warn firework users to be courteous and responsible for their communities’ sake. In Eugene City limits, fireworks are only legal to set off on July 3rd and 4th and New Years Eve and New Years Day.
