Forest Service Manages Wildfire Near Opal Creek

U.S. Forest Service

A fire estimated at ten acres large is currently burning north of Detroit. The U.S. Forest Service categorized it as a Type 3 Fire, and assigned a management team and hotshot firefighters to the blaze.

Fire information officer Joanie Schmidgall said the fire is burning along remote Beachie Creek in rugged and steep terrain. It is about two miles south of Jawbone Flats and adjacent to the Opal Creek wilderness.

"We've been assessing the fire by air," said Schmidgall. "We have a hotshot crew out there right now who is trying to figure out the best way to access the fire. But the fire is several miles from the nearest road access, so they're having to hike in quite a ways on really steep and rough terrain."

Schmidgall says the Beachie Creek fire is at zero percent containment, so the management team has closed off many of the surrounding campgrounds and recreational areas.
