The life of former University of Oregon President Dave Frohnmayer was celebrated Saturday in a public memorial service at Matthew Knight Arena on the U of O campus in Eugene. Frohnmayer served as state Attorney General, was a state legislator and was dean of the U of O law school. Oregon U.S. Senator Ron Wyden, State Senator Betsy Johnson and family members spoke of Frohnmayer's accomplishments and character.
His son Mark Frohnmayer quoted one of his father's students:
Mark Frohnmayer "If there is one thing I learned from Dave, and I can assure you there are many, it's overshadow your greatness with your goodness. It is not all that Dave did that defined him but how he did it. That is the legacy of Dave Frohnmayer-- not building Matthew Knight Arena, not saving the U of O Law School, not driving the Rajneeshis out of our state, and not even winning six cases in front of the United States Supreme Court. The legacy of Dave Frohnmayer is doing all of those things and then introducing himself to a college freshman as "Dave".
Dave Frohnmayer died earlier this month after quietly battling prostate cancer for more than 5 years. He was 74 years old.
