Health Officials Investigate E. Coli Deaths

National Institutes of Health

Health officials say it will take several days to identify the source of two E. Coli cases originating in Lincoln County. The county held a press conference Thursday in Newport with public health officer Dr. David Long. Bill Hall is a Lincoln County Commissioner.

Hall: “Over the past several days a variety of potential sources of the illness have been investigated--including potential exposure through contact with food, water and animal sources. No source of the connection has been confirmed or ruled out at this time. But Dr. Long says there is no reason to believe there is a risk to the general public at this time.”

4-year-old Serena Profitt died from kidney failure on Monday after contracting an E. Coli infection. 5-year-old Bradley Sutton is in critical condition and being treated for kidney failure, according to officials at a Tacoma Hospital. Profitt and Sutton attended the same Labor Day gathering in Lincoln County.
A separate case of E. Coli is linked to the death of 3-year-old Brooklyn Hoksbergen. She died last Friday in a Seattle hospital. Hall said the Seattle E. Coli case is unrelated to the two cases in Oregon. Health officials plan to release more information on the E. Coli source when lab results are confirmed.
