Hundreds Of Nudists Converge On Oregon To Mingle, Play, And Lobby

AANR

This week, hundreds of people will gather near Eugene and bare all for a national nudist convention.  As KLCC’s Brian Bull reports, there are serious public policy issues amidst the fun and frolic.

Between 500 to 600 people are expected at the annual event, organized by the American Association for Nude Recreation (AANR).  The Willamettans Family Nudist Resort will host a variety of games, cookouts, and meetings.

John Kinman is the resort’s former president, and is currently the AANR’s Public Relations Chair.  He says while the emphasis is mostly on hanging out with kindred spirits, there are also agenda items touching on governmental issues.

“I recall I went in to Salem and testified before a committee a couple of years ago," recalls Kinman.  "They were wanting to restrict nudity where alcohol was…and aimed at the nude bars in Beaverton area.  And we were there, along with the ACLU, testifying against the bill.  (The) senators said,  'Oh no, we’re not after you, that’s not our intention at all.'”

"And it was tabled, it never got to full vote.”

Kinman himself says he’s looking forward to dance night.  He says everyone is welcome, and people can wear as much or as little as they are comfortable with.
