Hundreds of people gathered outside a federal men’s prison in Sheridan on Monday night to protest the Trump administration’s immigration policies.
People held signs and sang along the barbed wire fencethat marks the edge of the medium-security federal prison. It’s the current home to 123 would-be immigrants. According to members of Oregon’s congressional delegation who toured the site recently, some of those men include fathers whowere separated from their children when they tried to enter the country. Bob Durnell of Eugene said he was deeply troubled by President Trump’s policy ofremoving children of asylum-seekers from their parents.
Bob Durnell: “I consider this to be the ultimate abuse to a child. It makes me sick.”
Advocates for the immigrants housed at the Sheridan prison say many of them have had difficulty contacting an attorney and in some cases have little information on the whereabouts of the rest of their family.
