Infrared Confirms Terwilliger Fire Is Far Larger Than Thought

(Sam Swetland)

The Terwilliger Fire off Highway 126 near Blue River is now burning more than 1,200 acres and is 1% contained. Smoky conditions limited crews’ ability to determine the exact perimeter of the fire until Tuesday night.

Sharma Chavez is the public information officer for Southwest Oregon Interagency Fire Management and is at incident command:

"The acreage increase is due to more accurate mapping, that wasn’t something that’s moving quickly, that’s just something that was reflected with more accurate mapping from the infrared flight last night."

There are currently 195 personnel—from five crews—working on the fire. That number is expected to increase. The cause of the blaze, near the popular Terwilliger natural hot springs, remains under investigation.

No residential structures are currently at risk. For a full list of areas closed to visitors, go here
